You are now approaching the Whataroa River. The river’s source is in the Southern Alps and flows north past the township of Whataroa before emptying into the Tasman Sea. The Whataroa River is also fed by the Perth River and crossed by State Highway 6. Visitors enjoy white water rafting on the river as well as exploring the canyons and gorges. The Whataroa River has been called one of the best whitewater rafting spots in New Zealand and boasts Class 4 rapids. Access to the upper reaches of the river can be achieved by hiking or by helicopter.
