You are now approaching Whataroa, the northern gateway to the South West World Heritage Area. Whataroa is a small rural town with a population of 400 people. Farming and especially dairy farming are the main industry in the town. Whataroa is also a base for the White Heron Sanctuary, the only breeding colony of White Heron in the country. In the town’s centre you will find an information centre with details on café’s, hotels and galleries in and around Whataroa. Also note that the Glaciers are only a short drive away.
